Abstract

A new maturity scale is determined macroscopic and microscopically for Peruvian hake Merluccius gayi peruanus. Gonads of females and males were analyzed after being collected on Demersal Trawl Surveys from autumn 2002 to summer 2004. Based on inherent features of each gonadal maturity stage, the microscopic characteristics were analyzed and the most conspicuous visual features were determined in each maturity stage, establishing six maturity stages for both females and males: 0 (virgin), I (resting), II (maturing), III (mature), IV (spawning/expulsion), V (recovery/post expulsion).
