Abstract

The study focused on investigating the phytoplankton community and its abundance patterns in Paracas Bay - Pisco (13°S) from 2013 to 2015. Samples were collected at two depth levels during different seasons: autumn (April 2013), spring (November 2014), summer, and winter (March and July 2015). Diatoms and Phytoflagellates (ND) emerged as the dominant groups in the bay, followed by dinoflagellates, silicoflagellates, and coccolithophores, although they were quantitatively less significant. A clear seasonal pattern was observed in the community, with a notable abundance of the functional group characterized by the “R” strategy, comprising chain-forming species with a high surface-to-volume ratio during spring and summer. Our study revealed an actively growing community with low diversity indices (H’< 2.5 bits.cel-1), particularly during the spring and summer campaigns. Changes in community structure primarily correlated with phosphate and silicate concentrations in diatoms, as well as alterations in the N:P ratio in dinoflagellates, which exhibited higher abundances (41 x 104 cel.L-1) in summer (Mean SST > 20.7 °C).
