Abstract

In this paper, the conditions of the Peruvian waters during
the 2109-11 hydroacoustic assessment cruise targeting pelagic resources are described. Surface temperatures
were slightly cold (-0.74 °C), particularly south of Salaverry. Salinity data helped identify various water masses in the surveyed area, such as Equatorial Surface Waters (ESW) beyond 60 nm off Talara, Subtropical Surface Waters (SSW), Equatorial Subsurface Waters (ESSW), and intermittent patches of cold coastal waters (ccw) reaching up to 30 nm. Using the 15 °C isotherm depth and geostrophic calculations, prevailing northward currents were observed within 50 nm. Surface oxygen exhibited a non-uniform distribution across the entire sampled area. Additionally, low oxygen concentration cores were found within the first 10 nm, a characteristic sign of coastal upwelling.
