Abstract

The biogeochemical characteristics of marine sediments and interstitial water on the continental shelf off Callao (12°S) and Pisco (14°S) were investigated between 2013 and 2019 as part of the objectives of the national project “Integrated Study of Coastal Upwelling in the Peruvian Margin.” Both Callao and Pisco exhibited sediments with high total organic matter (> 13%), with a significant increase towards the outer shelf. The analysis revealed elevated levels of total organic carbon and varying percentages of calcium carbonate (averaging 12-18% for Callao and 15-18% for Pisco), indicating temporal changes associated with oceanographic variations. The C/N ratio on the continental shelf off Callao and Pisco ranged from 6 to 11, reflecting the predominance of phytoplankton-derived organic matter (OM). Notably, Callao displayed more labile OM on the outer shelf, while the coastal zone exhibited a significant decrease in nitrogen, indicating intense recycling under oxygen-deficient conditions. pH and sulfide profiles suggested greater sulfate-reducing activity in Callao compared to Pisco, although hydrogen sulfide accumulation was not observed, possibly due to oxidation processes influenced by redox-sensitive metals like iron.
