Genotypic Variations of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) isolated from cultured shrimp in Peru

The White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) stands as a prominent pathogen affecting penaeid shrimp globally. Since its emergence, WSSV has shown a remarkable ability to alter its genetic structure, resulting in a diversity of genotypes. This study aims to identify the genotypic variants of WSSV prevalent in shrimp farming along the northern coast of Peru (Tumbes Region). A total of 89 samples of gills and postlarvae from WSSV-infected shrimp were assessed between 2014 and 2021. The analysis involved PCR and sequencing of variable DNA regions located within open reading frames (ORFs) 75, 94, 125, 14/15, 23/24, and a putative transposase gene. Comparative to reference WSSV genomes, all samples exhibited deletions of 5138 bp in ORF 14/15, 11110 bp in ORF 23/24, and 1338 bp in a putative transposase gene. Variability
in repetitive sequence numbers within ORFs 75, 94, and 125 ranged from 6 to 8, 1 to 3, and 2 to 13, respectively. This
variability enabled the detection of up to 8 WSSV genotypes within cultured shrimp populations in northern Peru. This
initial discovery of genotypic diversity sets the stage for future epidemiological investigations into WSSV among both cultured and wild shrimp in this region.
