Abstract

In the spring of 2019, the marine ecosystem along the Peruvian coast showcased diverse zooplankton biovolumes, spanning from 3x10-3 to 10.8 mL.m-3. On average, the biovolume measured 0.54 mL.m-3, with a median of 0.3 mL.m-3. Particularly, elevated biovolumes (>1 mL.m-3) were observed at the extremities of the Peruvian coastline, extending from Punta Sal to Malabrigo in the north and from Independencia Bay to Atico in the south. In the central region, biovolumes below 0.5 mL.m-3 were prevalent, with a slight concentration (>0.5 mL.m-3) off the coast of Callao. E. ringens was the most frequent ichthyoplankton species, constituting 41.5 % and 47 % of stations with the presence of eggs and larvae, respectively. Median densities were recorded at 252 eggs.m-2 and 15 larvae.m-2. The distribution of eggs displayed a continuous pattern, with substantial concentrations (> 4000 eggs.m-2) along coastal areas front Malabrigo, Salaverry, Casma, Chancay, and Cerro Azul. In contrast, larvae exhibited a more uniform distribution, with higher densities (<500 larvae.m-2) in the north-central area, ranging from Punta La Negra to Chimbote. Among euphausiids, juvenile stages of Euphausia sp. (39 %), along with adults (26.1 %) and juveniles (25.44 %) of E. mucronata, and furcilia of Stylocheiron sp. (12.2 %), were the most frequently observed. Nevertheless, undetermined species displayed more abundant larval stages (calyptopis and furcilia) with median densities of 45 ind m-2 (calyptopis) and 240 ind.m-2 (furcilia). In terms of cephalopod paralarvae, Argonauta spp. were the dominant species, constituting 19.5 % of the recorded occurrences, with abundances reaching up to 69 ind.m-2.
