Abstract

The species that presented the greatest catches in the Bransfield Strait was the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) (95.7%), followed by the jellyfish Scyphozoa Desmodesmus chierchianum (2.3%). The relative abundance of krill was 203.5 ± 347.9 individuals / 1000 m3, which is higher than that recorded in the expeditions of 1982, 1996, 1998 and 2003. The size structure was dominated by juveniles (45.5%), sub-adults (46.7%) and adults (8.6%). The main peak between 35-40 mm and a secondary peak in 42-45 mm. Only few individuals presented in reproduction. Krill fed during evening hours.
