Humboldt Penguin population on Pachacamac Island, the main penguin colony of the central coast, was surveyed during 1997. Food availability for Humboldt Penguins became scarce around the island due to El Niño 97-98.
Changes in food availability caused Penguins population to decrease from 535 individuals in June to 92 in December. A first laying period was estimated to occur in April and a second one was observed in August. The first laying peak coincided with the one described for Punta San Juan, which occurred from April to May. The second one may include individuals breeding for a second time and failed breeders which were encouraged by an apparent recovery of food supplies during August.
