Surface sediments of the Peruvian continental margin: a textural map.
The distribution of surface sediments of the Peruvian continental margin is presented in two color-maps. Between 7° and 10°30’S sandy sediments predominate on the broad shelf, reaching down to the upper parts of the continental slope. South of this area only coastal patches of sandy sediments were encountered. Nearly the whole continental slope and great parts of the shelf south of 10°30’S are covered with silty clay; north of 10°30’S some coastal patches were found.
Environmental factors peculiar of the region are determining the observed textural pattern. In the whole area of investigation more or less strong upwelling can be observed and biological productivity is high. Among the various environmental factors leading to the formation of sandy sediments or silty clay, well or poorly oxygenated waters and strong or weak near-bottom currents, respectively, are considered to be the most important.
