Abstract

Meristic and morphometric characters of Cynoscion analis and altipinnis from the north of Peru are analized as a contribution to the differentiation of the species, both called "cachemas".

Meristic characters like the number of anal and pectoral fin rays, used by other authors for the differentiation of these species, are not useful because of their overlapping ranges.

We recomended to use the morphological different otoliths (sagitae) and a new external character to separate the two species of Cynoscion.
