Abstract

At the Huachipa Laboratory of the Instituto del Mar del Perú, between October 1980 and August 1982, severa experiments were made in order to determine the effects of the pond type, stock density, and quality and quantity of organic fertilizer in the growth and - production of Tilapia nilotica. The experiments failed to show significative differences among the treatments. So, severa averages for growth and. production were calculated to allow comparison with the production and growth figures obtained in other areas of the world; an average individual weight of 203.4 g, a total production of 2,038 Kg/ha/272 days, and a net production of 5.6 Kg/ha/day. These figures are within the range production reported by the ICA (International Center for Aq uaculture) for temperate climates; similars to the ones obtained in Central European countries and China, and remarkably low compared with the 20 Kg/ha/day produced in Israel. The poor conditions of the ponds used, the low density of the stock applied, the low quality of the fertilizer and the climate of the zone, specifically the presence of cloudiness, were identified as the factors of majar incidence in the low satisfactory results.
