Abstract

Existing egg sample data from standard surveys off Peru in the past 20 years have been used for a first approximation of the number of samples required for a given level of precision of estimate of egg production by the anchoveta per unit of sea surface area. The anchoveta appears to spawn in schools resulting in large proportion of the eggs being taken in a small proportion of the samples. Approximately 80% of the positive samples exceed 4096 eggs per m². An important change in the population size of the Peruvian anchoveta has been noted in 1972. The range of egg sample values was similar before and after that change but the mean number of eggs per positive sample was nearly twice as large before the population decline in 1971. Considerations of sample precision and the cost and availability of ship time in the spawning season have been merged to produce a cruise plan with useful projected precision at a reasonable cost. The survey area is 640 miles coastwise and 90 miles offshore and covers 57600 square miles. A 300% precision of estimate requires 924 samples and a 200% precision requires 2078 samples in this projection. Biases in the estimation of precision are discussed. The log-normal probability distribution is used to describe the positive samples.
