Abstract

The sea cucumber Pattalus mollis is an echinoderm that is extracted on Ancash coast to be exported, mainly, to Asian countries. Its extraction has been decreasing in the last ten years. Catch information from 2008 to 2017 was analized and that obtained in three marine surveys carried out in the rocky intertidal of Casma and Huarmey, in September and October 2017 and June 2018, was analyzed to determine sizes, gonadal maturity, and relative densities per distribution area. It was worked through transects and a 1 m2 quadrat where temperature, oxygen, and salinity data were obtained. The size range varied from 25 to 312 mm in length. The macroscopic analysis of gonads indicated for all surveys that between 48.9 and 61.9% were mature specimens and between 18.7 and 40.9% were spawning. The length-to-weight ratio showed an r2 of 0.836 and negative allometric growth (b< 3.00). The mean densities of the resource varied from 0.1 to 2.9 ind/m2 for the Casma and from 0 to 25.0 ind/m2 for the Huarmey. Densities ranged from 13.3 to 50.7 ind/10’ dive in Casma and from 10.6 to 65.9 ind/10’ dive in Huarmey Cajero-Grita Lobos (Casma) and Vapor-Patillos (Huarmey) were the areas with the highest concentration. The species was found associated with Cold Coastal Waters (CCW), with mean surface temperature ranging from 14.4 to 15.8 °C and dissolved oxygen concentration from 3.25 to 4.48 mg/L.
