Efects of pollution on Orestias fishes in the inner Puno Bay, Lake Titicaca

Between March and August 2013, we conducted a histopathological study of Orestias fishes from the inner Puno Bay in Lake Titicaca, following the mortality event that occurred in March. This work aims to determine the possible factors that caused the death of the fishes and the damage to their tissues. Therefore, we sampled 18 specimens whose organs were fixed in 10% formaldehyde solution in phosphate buffer and then processed by histological techniques. The histopathological analysis revealed damages at the gill level such as edema, congestion, telangiectasia, deformation, epithelial hyperplasia, and lamellae fusion, which are associated with high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen in the water.
