First report of Haemulon sexfasciatum Gill, 1862 (Perciformes: Haemulidae) in northern Peru

Haemulon sexfasciatum, is a tropical marine-coastal species, belonging to the family Haemulidae. It is considered endemic to the Eastern Pacific, recorded from the tip of Baja California and the Gulf of California to Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands and Malpelo Island (Colombia). In February 2019, artisanal fishermen caught one specimen as a bycatch in the artisanal gillnet fishery for Anisotremus scapularis “Peruvian grunt” in Pacasmayo (7°26’6.8’’S, 79°35’16.6’’W). The finding occurred in warm oceanographic conditions typical of the development of weak El Niño on the Peruvian north-central coast. The external, morphometric, and meristic characteristics coincided with the genus and species, being the main characteristics for its identification: the dark vertical stripes that were observed on the back, as well as the scales found on the soft part of the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. This species was not recorded in Peru, so this is the first report.
