Presence of a juvenile common dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758 off the southern Peruvian coast during the 2017 coastal el niño

The common dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus is a migratory pelagic fish distributed in tropical and subtropical waters throughout the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. In the Peruvian sea, its distribution and abundance are associated with Subtropical Surface Waters (SSW). A juvenile of C. hippurus (Linnaeus, 1758) was caught 34 mn off the coast of Punta de Bombón, Islay – Arequipa (17°32’49.6”S and 72°17’23.38’’W) on February 8, 2017. Meristic and morphometric parameters confirmed its identification. This finding is evidence of the presence of spawning and nursery grounds in the southeastern Pacific, probably favored by the 2017 coastal El Niño conditions.
