Abstract

The unusual presence of Rostroraja velezi, known as the witch skate, has been reported from artisanal fisheries during the coastal El Niño event of 2023. This record is based on a female specimen of 62 cm total length (TL) caught off the fishing area known as “Bajada de Cañete” (13°10’15’‘S and 76°27’10’’W) with the use of a 10” bottom gillnet at a depth of 27 m, on a sandy bottom. The species was initially recorded on the north coast of Peru (5°1’S and 81°23’W), its presence on the central coast is not usual, so it is considered as a first report of geographical range expansion in the central coast of Peru. Its presence could be due to changes in oceanographic conditions, such as the presence of a coastal Niño in that year, which could have caused its latitudinal displacement.
