Abstract

Anchovy spawning variability in an area between 3°-14° S, since 1966 to 1999, a period in which were different environmental conditions that caused benefit or damage to the resource, is analyzed. Also it is compared spawning magnitude in cold and warm periods using spawning rates expressed in number of eggs per m", which were the results of samplings with Hensen net in the column of 50 metres to the surface during Winter. High spawning rates were found in 1966, when eggs reached 150 miles off the coast. On the other hand, in 1983, as consequence of El Niño 1982-83 spawning was null. After the last El Niño 1997-1998, spawning began to recover, increasing these rates gradually.
