Phytoplankton populations, nutrients and photosynthesis in peruvian costal wathers
Keywords:
Fitoplancton, Fotosíntesis, Población, NutrientesAbstract
Details are given of primary production, nutrients and the phytoplankton crop at selected stations in the Peru current. Two conditions were commonly encountered. In one the water contained abundant nutrients and an actively growing plant population of relatively low standing stock (blue water) and in the other the stock of phytoplankton was high (brown water). The blue water population h d a relatively low diversity and the average cell size and number were too small for the phytoplankton to be a likely food for anchovetta. The reasons for the existence of highly fertile water with low standing stocks are discussed. The primary production of the near-shore area is well in excess of 200 g C/m2 year.
