Environmental quality of the Coishco and Casma Bays, Ancash Region, Peru (2013 – 2017)

Industrial fishing activity for the production of fishmeal, fish oil, and fish preserves is developed in Coishco Bay. Artisanal fisheries and mariculture are developed in Casma, thus producing significant changes, and variations in the hydrochemical characteristics of the marine ecosystem. The continuous discharge of domestic wastewater and waste from the fishing industry and mariculture strongly affect the marine environment and the benthic community in Coishco. This work aims to determine the effects of pollution on these bays from 2013 to 2017. The determination of the physical, chemical, biological, and microbiological parameters was carried out with protocols and methodologies of national and international use (IMARPE, USEPA, FAO, APHA). The results showed that the values were below the minimum established by the National Environmental Quality Standards for Water (EQS) for the period studied. Nonetheless, more sea mud was observed in Coishco than in Casma. Nonetheless, more sea mud was observed in Coishco than in Casma.
