Engraulis ringens is the dominant small pelagic fish in the Humboldt Current System and constitutes the foundation of the Peruvian fishery. As a lipid-rich species, it accumulates substantial energy reserves in the form of fatty acids that support essential physiological processes, including reproduction. This study investigated the fatty acid composition of E. ringens, with particular emphasis on eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and examined their relationship with reproductive condition as measured by the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and spawning fraction (SF). Samples were collected from artisanal and industrial fisheries operating off Callao, Peru, between April 2018 and March 2019. Total lipid content and fatty acid composition were determined using standard extraction and analytical procedures (Folch method). Palmitic acid was the dominant fatty acid throughout the study period, accounting for 5.16–26.45 % of total fatty acids. Its lowest concentrations were recorded during September and October, coinciding with the period of greatest reproductive activity. EPA and DHA exhibited clear temporal variability and were inversely associated with both reproductive indicators. Elevated concentrations of these essential fatty acids were observed during the reproductive resting phase, whereas lower concentrations occurred during periods of active spawning.
