Abstract

In this paper, we describe the macroscopic and microscopic gonad maturity scale of Peruvian anchovy Engraulis ringens based on the analysis of 1970 gonads (1251 ovaries and 719 testicles), from the Pelagic Fishery Monitoring System during 2006, 2008, 2009 2012 and the Pelagic Research Survey of 2006, 2009 and 2012. This maturity scale identifies six stages of maturity for females and males which are: 0 (virgin), I (resting), II (maturing) III (mature), IV (spawning/ expulsion), V (recovery/post expulsion).
