Abundance of guano birds and its relation with fishery of Peruvian anchoveta from 1953 to 1999

Guanay Cormorant Leucocarbo bougainvillii, Peruvian Booby Sula variegata and Peruvian Pelican Pelecanus thagus population data series were updated from 1953 to 1999. In the early 1950's, the industrial fishery development caused a change in the guano birds population dynamics. Since 1965 El Niño event, which caused 76% mortality on 17 million guano birds, decreasing until about 4 million individuals, their population has not recovered their maximum values reached before the industrial fishery development. The tendency to increase observed since 1983, was severely affected by El Niño 1997-98. At the end of 1999 a slightly guano birds population recovery was noticed; however, its levels continue being lower than those reached before El Niño 1997-98 event. It has been suggested that the food is the main cause in the regulation of seabirds population, and recent studies show that the prey availability acts like a limiting factor for the reproductive population size. The reduction of suitable areas for seabirds reproduction, due to an increasing human disturbance, could be restricting the population growth.
